Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When's the date again?
A: Saturday, July 29th 2017. We hope to see you there!
Q: Is there a dress code for the wedding?
A: Our dress code is semi formal. There is no need to rent a tux or purchase a ballgown, but it is still a wedding! Guests should also note the ceremony will be taking place outside at the end of July, and should dress accordingly.
Q: What is a Mehndi night, and am I invited?
A: The Mehndi night is integral to an Indian wedding. It is when the bride, and her female family and friends are adorned in traditional mehndi (or henna). The bride's hands and feet are covered with intricate designs, and it is said the darker the colour of the mehndi the deeper the love between the bride and groom. If you were invited to the wedding, and identify as a woman, you are welcome to stop by. If you cannot make it, but still wish to receive mehndi don't worry! There will be mehndi artists available during the Pithi as well.
Q: What does one wear to a Mehndi night?
A: Mehndi stains, plain and simple. Wear something dark in colour or something you don't mind ruining to avoid any mishaps. This is a very casual event, no need to dress up.
Q: What is a Pithi, and am I invited?
A: The Pithi, and other ceremonies are also an integral part of an Indian wedding. A traditional Indian wedding spans several days, however we have simply combined all the ceremonies that occur over those several days into one night, so that as many guests as possible can attend. If you are invited to attend the wedding you are also invited to attend the Pithi. Expect lots of Indian food and fun!
Q: What does one wear to a Pithi?
A: Chances are, if you're asking this question, you probably don't have a sari or lehenga lying around. If you do, this is your chance to wear it! Otherwise the dress code would be similar to a Canadian wedding.
Q: What's with all the Indian traditions?
A: Alysha is Indian Pakistani on her father's side and was raised in the Muslim faith. These ceremonies and traditions are incredibly important to her and her family, and without them the wedding would not be complete. While the wedding itself is Canadian, Alysha wishes to honour her family's heritage by hosting traditional Indian events. We hope you will be able to join us for this multi-day affair!
Q: How can I get to the wedding?
A: Because the wedding is about 30 minutes outside of Edmonton, the bride and groom have arranged for a shuttle bus from the Best Western South Edmonton to the Venue and back again at the end of the night. Of course if you feel comfortable driving, you are more than welcome, there is ample parking available. But a wedding is a time to celebrate, and the middle of nowhere is not exactly the best place to try and catch a cab. It is highly recommended that if you plan on enjoying a few drinks at the wedding, to take the shuttle. Even if you are not staying at the hotel, you may park at the hotel and use the shuttle. Find out more about the wedding shuttle on our Getting There page.
